Venn diagrams part three

Venn diagrams can be used to show the number of people or objects or anything else in sets.

If there are 150 students in a school and 20 study neither French or Spanish, 100 are studying French and 50 are studying Spanish. How many are studying French and Spanish?

We can solve this with the help of a Venn Diagram.

If we let x represent the number of students studying French and Spanish then 100 – x students are studying French without Spanish. 50 – x are studying Spanish without French. 20 are studying neither.

Adding all of these numbers together equals the number in the universal set.

100 - x + x + 50 - x + 20 = 150

170 - x = 150

x = 20
