Mixed numbers

A mixed number is the sum of a non-zero integer and a proper fraction.

2\frac{2}{3} is a mixed number and so is -2\frac{2}{3}.

\frac{2}{3} is a proper fraction and not a mixed number.

2\frac{2}{3} is like 2 + \frac{2}{3} but the plus sign isn’t written, only implied. -2\frac{2}{3} is like -(2 + \frac{2}{3}).

Improper fractions can be written as mixed numbers.

For example \frac{8}{3} is equivalent to \frac{6}{3} + \frac{2}{3} which is equivalent to 2 + \frac{2}{3} and can be written as a mixed number 2\frac{2}{3}.
